This is our beloved Sister Clare Lewis. She is the only living member of our community who resided in the original monastery on Haultain Street in Victoria.
Sister Clare was born in Jamaica, and joined the Franciscan Sisters in Allegany New York. She returned to Jamaica to teach at the High School she had attended as a student. The desire to be a Contemplative Sister continued to grow in her, and in 1950 she travelled from Jamaica to Vancouver Island to join the Poor Clares in Victoria.
Sr. Clare has been a Poor Clare for over 55 years, and has served in all roles of leadership in the community, as well as being the master printer and all around problem solver for the monastery. As the youngest in her family, she is now the last remaining member of that generation. Her gentleness and peaceful spirit continues to inspire her family and friends, as well as the sisters she lived with. At present she requires more care than can be provided in the monastery, and she is residing in a nearby full care facility. She is always glad to see the sisters when we arrive for our daily visits with her. She holds a special place in the hearts of many people in the area, as is evidenced by the number of visitors who come to spend quiet time with her. Without words, she continues to call others to a faithful trust in God’s loving providence.
